Paddling routes 

Set out on the water and experience the area's natural calm by paddling. The routes pass through clear-water lakes, green shores, and sheltered coves, offering both short loops for beginners and longer, more adventurous day trips. Along the way you can stop at campfire sites, watch birdlife, and enjoy the quiet of the waters.

Myllyselkä paddling loop 12km

The Myllyselkä paddling loop is about 12 kilometers long and a self-guided day route that runs through Äänekoski’s beautiful lake nature. The Myllyselkä loop is an easy, straightforward paddling route, perfect for a relaxed day trip.

Starting point: Lossinranta. The paddle starts from Lossinranta, launching from the sandy beach.

Mämmensalmi bridge culvert tunnel

A small touch of adventure awaits as you paddle through the culvert that runs under the Mämmensalmi bridge.

Koulun ranta

At Koulun ranta there is an excellent stopping place inviting paddlers to rest and enjoy the lakeside. The area has a campfire site and a sandy beach that is perfect for swimming. This spot serves as a natural halfway break before returning to Lossinranta.

Mämmen summer church (1962)

Along the route, Mämmen summer church—a beautiful wooden church completed in 1962—appears in the shoreline scenery. The surroundings are peaceful and offer a moment’s rest amid the lake views. Land on the sandy beach.

Ala-Keiteleen Ahmaisu

Spend more time on the water and tackle Ala-Keitele in 2–3 days! This paddling route is for those who already have paddling experience—or we recommend taking a guide so you can focus on enjoying the route and the scenery. Along the way you will cross larger open waters, so paying attention to wind conditions is important. Rekolahden luonnonsatama and Kettuhiekka lead you via Niemensalmi and Aittosalmi into the Sumiainen archipelago. Vedin-kapeikko takes you into the heart of Keitele, to the rugged beauty of rocky islets and the softness of sandy beaches. Also enjoy the gentle steam of the sauna on Petäjäsaari and pause in nature.

Starting point: Mustanniemi harbor. The route begins at Mustanniemi harbor, where it’s easy to launch a kayak. The harbor offers straightforward facilities and serves as a natural starting point for a multi-day paddling adventure.

Risusaari

The first stop is Risusaari, where a lean-to shelter, campfire site and dry toilet await. Risusaari is ideal for an early break or an overnight stay and offers a sheltered island atmosphere before you head toward more open lake areas.

Rekolahden luonnonsatama

Next you arrive at Rekolahden luonnonsatama. The area has: a lean-to shelter, a fire site, and a dry toilet. The surroundings offer a good moment to recover. On the magnificent long sandy beach you can enjoy the views or refresh yourself by swimming.

Kettuhiekka

Kettuhiekka is an atmospheric, soft-shored rest spot where paddlers can pause at the campfire site and enjoy the area’s scenic calm.

Niemensalmi ja Aittosalmi

Niemensalmi and Aittosalmi lead paddlers into the Sumiainen archipelago scenery. The area is known for its beauty, and the straits open up views of rocky shores. This section gives the route its own rhythm and visual richness.

Härkinsalmen venevalkama

Härkinsalmen venevalkama serves as a landing point and a breather before heading toward Petäjäsaaren retkisatama.

Petäjäsaaren retkisatama

Petäjäsaaren retkisatama is an experiential highlight of the route. On the island a sauna awaits paddlers—the perfect place to unwind after a long day on the water. There is also a campfire site for cooking. The kota hut likewise offers shelter and a place to rest. Petäjäsaari is excellent for overnighters and those on a longer paddling trip.

Sumiaisten satama

The route can end—or alternatively also start—at Sumiaisten satama. The harbor has: a water point, a swimming beach, and a toilet. Good services and clear access to the area. Sumiaisten satama offers paddlers a well-serviced, peaceful finish to a longer lake trip.
