New premises of the Hair Splitter

I had gone to the same hairdresser since childhood, and even the thought of letting someone else touch my hair with scissors felt agonizing. When moving to Central Finland became very real and salon trips to Kymenlaakso would have been far too long, I had to find a new trusted professional to put scissors to my curls. I tried a few different options until I found the right one, Marika. I was Marika’s client already before Hiushalkomo, and I wouldn’t switch for anything!

Hiushalkomo operated for about three and a half years upstairs at Koskikeskus, but has recently moved to new premises on Sammonkatu, which I went to explore and fell in love with. First of all, the premises are BIG, spacious, and bright; secondly, they are accessible. There’s almost always free parking along the street, and behind Halkomo’s corner there are Halkomo’s very own marked parking spaces as well. You can even drive right up to the door, from where you can enter without having to cross any significant thresholds, and inside there’s room to bring along your whole array of assistive devices.

In the wonderfully homey space, the shelves are laden with products to take with you, and new arrivals have appeared with the move. At Halkomo they aim to invest more and more in natural cosmetics, and there’s demand for them too. I think this is a really nice plus: on a salon visit you can top up your own cosmetics stash without having to drive to eco shops in Jyväskylä or order products online. Among Halkomo’s natural cosmetics you’ll find both products from Finnish small entrepreneurs and well-known items from international giants. Flowers decorate the tables, and the colorful interior elements make Hiushalkomo look just like its stylist.

And the stylist doesn’t work alone, as a chair-renting colleague joined some time ago. At Hiushalkomo, in addition to hair, you can also enhance your brows and lashes as well as your nails. Even brow lamination—something that sounded completely unfamiliar to me—is available.

Hiushalkomo’s product selection

It’s worth coming to admire Hiushalkomo’s gorgeous premises. The doors are open according to the opening hours until 16:00, but very often the lights are on well into the evening when they’re busy with customers at Halkomo. Halkomo’s opening celebrations will be held Friday 13 March, 10–18, with coffee and braided buns on offer, and something will be happening on the hour every hour!
