Summer is Coming - Experience Äänekoski by Biking, Paddling, and Following Stories
Sini Kaapro-Lindenberg |
A quiet open lake, a gravel road undulating like a roller coaster, and stories that come alive in the landscape. Äänekoski’s new paddling, culture and cycling routes offer summer experiences to be felt on the move – paddling, cycling and pausing to take in the scenery.

Paddling routes – open waters, islands and lakeside sauna steam
Two different paddling routes run across clear‑water lakes and sheltered reaches, each offering its own kind of experience. The easier route leads to a leisurely day trip, cradled by protected coves where nature is close. The longer route invites adventure: this more challenging whole calls you to the water for 2–3 days.

Myllyselän melontakierros is an easy and calm about 8–10 kilometer day‑trip route. It runs on sheltered waters and is excellent for beginners or relaxed summer paddling. Along the way you can stop for a swim and enjoy the lake views without hurry.
For those craving a slightly longer adventure, Ala‑Keiteleen Ahmaisu offers an impressive paddling experience. The total length is about 40 kilometers, and it can be paddled as a multi‑day trip or in shorter sections. In terms of difficulty, the route is intermediate: it rewards you with unhurried progress, wide open waters and archipelago scenery.

One of the route’s most atmospheric stops is Petäjäsaari, where a lakeside sauna awaits paddlers. A steamy sauna with lake views crowns the paddling day and makes the route a truly Central Finland experience.

Cycling routes – short trips and long gravel adventures
From the saddle, a new perspective opens onto Lake Keitele’s shores and forests. Äänekoski’s cycling routes traverse the same landscapes that once inspired artist Akseli Gallen‑Kallela.

For relaxed touring, the Äänekosken rantojen reitti is about 16 kilometers long and easy in difficulty. The route follows lakeside scenery and offers a pleasant experience for cyclists of all ages. Along the way there are opportunities to stop for a swim, take a break or enjoy local services.

For adventure‑minded cyclists, Äänekoski offers the Lake Keitele Gravel route, also known as Valloita Lake Keitele. This over 100‑kilometer gravel route is intermediate–demanding and suits more experienced riders. It takes you onto roller‑coaster‑like gravel roads, rolling landscapes and long, enjoyable stretches around Lake Keitele. You can ride it as an intensive day trip or split it over two days.

Culture route – stories in Suolahti and Konginkangas
Not all routes run only on land or water. The Culture route leads travellers to Suolahti and Konginkangas, tracing Akseli Gallen‑Kallela’s journeys. In terms of difficulty, it is easy and can be done on foot or as part of a bike ride.
The Culture route adds a storytelling dimension to moving around: the landscape, surroundings and history open up in a new way when you know who has walked these same places before.

Combine the routes and build your own summer itinerary
The strength of Äänekoski’s routes is how easily they combine. A day can start by cycling the Äänekosken rantojen reitti, continue with a paddling trip on Myllyselkä or the Ala‑Keiteleen Ahmaisu route, and end with the Culture route’s stories in Suolahti or Konginkangas.

Route openings kick off the summer in Äänekoski
You can discover Äänekoski’s new routes practically right at the start of summer, when the gravel cycling routes and paddling routes open to the public in early June. The opening events invite both locals and visitors to join with ease.
