Accommodation and Fishing - Vonkale's counterattack against COVID-19 restrictions

When, in January–February, news began to arrive from China about a serious respiratory-transmitted virus, few of us could have guessed how much it would affect our lives and how quickly.

Now, a few months later, homes and workplaces have had time to get over the initial shock and focus on the things that are still in our own hands. At Vonkale, we have used the freed-up time to our advantage and tidied the forest, extended the existing nature trail, and prepared a good amount of firewood for the coming winter. The cottages’ thorough deep cleans are nearing the finish line. To maintain a good level of hygiene, we have also decided, for the time being, to provide renters with bed linen and towels. Receiving guests and presenting the area is now handled from a safe distance, and payment is made by invoice as agreed.

Regarding guided fishing trips, we have canceled the spring fishing excursions on the recommendation of the Finnish Fishing Guides’ Guild. Hopefully soon, already in the summer, we could, together with our customers, dive into, for example, the secrets of jig fishing! This spring has given us time to practice new fishing spots for upcoming trips. While fishing you can enjoy the peace that nature offers, focus completely on the moment - and forget financial and other worries.

We have wanted to enable safe outdoor activity for local families by offering them free use of our lean-to shelter with firewood. These private lean-to slots have been used nicely, and they can still be reserved :)

At Easter we hid small surprises around Äänekoski. A tour of the region and coming up with clues to find the caches was a nice change of pace for our own everyday life, too. All the caches were reported found quite soon after the clues were published. Thanks to the positive feedback we received, we decided to make this a tradition.

Summer is just around the corner. Our cottages still have availability for guests who appreciate nature and tranquility. A rowing trip to a nearby island, hiking in the forest, or angling while sitting on the shore rocks relaxes and gives strength in the midst of everyday life.

It has been nice to see how here in Äänekoski we have met the challenges brought by coronavirus, for example by considering at-risk groups with extended store opening hours. With schools closed, ready-to-heat school lunches with healthy sides have been offered to make everyday life easier for families with children. There are many more such examples. This is a good city to live in.
