Have you been thinking about starting a new hobby and enjoy spending time in nature? Paddling suits most people, and it lets you discover entirely new destinations in Äänekoski, too. Here you will find numerous islands and hundreds of kilometres of shoreline. Only your imagination sets the limits as your canoe glides from the shore toward new discoveries.

Paddling is for everyone

Traveling by canoe and kayak suits people of all fitness levels and is a pleasant way to explore nearby islands from the water. Beginners can try paddling by renting equipment and joining guided canoe trips. Equipment rental is offered by, among others Majoitus & kalastus Vonkale. As a hobby, paddling is very versatile: some like to pack a canoe and unhurriedly explore different shores and islands while touring, while others seek an adrenaline rush by playing in the rapids. Below you will find tips from our Visit ambassador Teemu Hakalax for new paddlers.

Before heading out on the water:

  • Check the weather forecasts; various apps help predict e.g. wind strength
  • Tell your loved ones where you are going, and take along an experienced paddler
  • Choose a route that matches your skill level, and ask for help if you are unsure about route planning
  • Dress for the weather and consider the water temperature, too
  • Pack your gear in barrels and tie the barrel to the canoe, so your belongings stay dry. Dry bags also work for this purpose.

Pack at least these for a short trip:

  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, and first aid supplies
  • A phone with useful apps, for example the 112 app
  • Always bring water, snacks, and a change of clothes
  • Whistle, map, and compass
  • Knife and fire-making tools
  • Dry spare clothes

On an overnight trip you will also need sleeping gear and much more. On the internet  you can easily find lists of gear that hikers need, which also work well for paddlers.

Keep these in mind on the water:

  • When moving along shores and on islands, check that you are not in a nature reserve. Also note bird nesting areas!
  • Favour landing sites marked on the map.
  • Be considerate of and respect other water users and the tranquillity of nature.
  • Paddler's tips for a successful trip:
  • Especially during holiday seasons, choose a route that avoids boating channels
  • Stay close to the shores and travel in the shelter of islands
  • Take your trash with you
  • Make a campfire only in designated places and follow forest fire warnings
  • Always wear a life jacket and monitor your own stamina

Route tip for the summer! Paddle from Sumiainen harbour to Petäjäsaari for a sauna, combining exercise and relaxation.

Good planning guarantees a successful paddling trip

With good planning, paddling trips are a pleasant and safe way to spend time, for example on weekends and during holidays. A surprising amount of gear fits in a canoe when you take time during packing to organize your equipment. When planning a route, always consider your fitness and skill level; this way the activity stays enjoyable and unpleasant injuries are avoided. Beginners should always ask for advice from those who have practised the sport for a long time and head out in experienced company. Good gear helps ensure a successful trip, as Finland's summer weather can surprise even seasoned paddlers. Wishing you enjoyable moments on the waters of Äänekoski!
