At last, school has ended and the holiday has begun. In my opinion, summer vacation is a chance to do what you enjoy—or to do nothing at all. This list is for the days when your mind craves something to do. And best of all, all the activities on the list are right nearby.

Pssstt! Many of the paid activities on the list offer student discounts—keep an eye out!

How to make summer fly by in Äänekoski

Summer in Äänekoski is full of events for all ages, and when it comes to activities, only your imagination sets the limit. Read below for tips for summer from Anna Inkeroinen, a young local from Äänekoski!

Experience culture

Summer is the perfect time to experience culture. Exploring culture is great to do both alone and together. In Äänekoski you can discover music, various exhibitions and theatre over the summer.

Culture can be heard and seen in Äänekoski’s summer, for example at the Ääniä Festival that became familiar last year. This July, in addition to local talents, Ääniä Festival will feature Yona, Shakkii and Pessa, among others. The event takes place 27–31 July 2022.

Other ways to soak up culture include Kartano Kievari’s summer theatre, which this summer presents Teatteri Eurooppa Neljän Simpauttaja. You can enjoy visual art in Hoikkasali at Äänekoski Library, where Nina Inkeriläinen’s art exhibition is on display until the end of June. At the Äänekoski Art Museum you can see sculptor and community artist Jaana Bombin’s 30th anniversary exhibition. A perfect exhibition for history enthusiasts is Mikon Matkassa, about Mikko Niskanen, open for the summer in Äänekoski town centre.

You can find up-to-date event information here.

A picnic belongs to summer

A picnic is a perfect way to spend a sunny summer day. Good food, fresh air and relaxed time together can be enjoyed in many ways. A picnic is also a great way to gather friends together even with little planning. Meet your friends in the middle of a green park or sit down on a pier.

What to pack for a summer picnic? Make the snacks yourself at home or pick up food to go from a nearby eatery. In Äänekoski town centre you’ll find, among others, Willen, Wilhelmiinan and Asian Street Food by Saran, where you can grab picnic treats easily as take-away.

Summer exercise options

In Äänekoski you’ll find a wide range of ways to be active when your body calls for it. There are sporty activities for rainy Finnish summer days, too. Around the Äänekoski area you’ll find great facilities for disc golf, swimming, skateboarding and scootering, as well as bowling

Disc golf courses are plentiful in Äänekoski and are located around the town. In total, Äänekoski has nearly 100 disc golf holes. Will you make it a summer goal to try them all? Note! You can also find course-specific descriptions on the Visit Äänekoski website.

When the summer sun gets too scorching, refresh yourself with a swim. There are 13 public beaches in the city where you can take a dip in the cool water. Near the Rantapuisto beach and the Suojärvi beach there is also a beach volleyball court. If you feel like swimming on a rainy day, head to an indoor pool. Of Äänekoski’s two indoor pools, Äänekosken VesiVelho is open until the beginning of July.

There are facilities for skateboarding and scootering in Suolahti and Äänekoski. In Huuhan Family Park, in addition to the skatepark, a long-awaited  asphalt-surfaced Pump Track has been completed.
