Rise to new heights at Easter and enjoy the peace of nature. Have you been wondering what to do during the Easter holiday in Äänekoski? Explorers will find plenty of different destinations for outings. We wanted to literally lift you up high and offer a couple of tips for enjoying the scenery from above. Instead of the Easter rush, you can relax and enjoy  Äänekoski’s stunning views at your own pace.

On the trails, springtime nature is starting to wake up. Snacks taste better on a hike, so it’s a great time to pack some trail treats in your backpack and head out to admire the views from up high. Can you spot migratory birds? Shh, very quietly, you might even hear them sing.

Tärttävuori from above

Tärttämäki lookout rock, Äänekoski

Have you heard of the Tärttämäki lookout rock? This hill rising near the center of Äänekoski offers stunning views over Kuhnamo’s Tärttälahti. There’s also a birdwatching tower on the hill; the trees growing beside it have stretched up and partly covered the view, but from the tower you can spot parts of the city of Äänekoski. Can you see the factory chimneys?

Getting there: Your route to the lookout rock starts from Tärttämäentie. It’s a 600 m walk from the car to the top. Note! The route is not maintained, so please be careful—especially when wet, the rock is very slippery! Directions

Äänemäki observation tower, Äänekoski

From the top of Äänemäki, from the observation tower a wonderful panorama opens far across Lake Keitele. You can also see the Häränvirta footbridge and the center of Äänekoski. Take a moment in the morning to watch the sunrise or spot birds from the tower. The first platform of the observation tower is accessible.

Views from the Äänemäki observation tower

Getting there: You can reach the observation tower by car via Kovalan tie and on foot via the fitness stairs (Torpparintie 1, 44100 Äänekoski) to about halfway up the ski slope, then continue along the trail to the top. Psst! In summer you can also reach the tower via the mountain bike trails!

Riihivuori, Suolahti

Riihivuori is a place where mind and body can unwind. The views open over Keitele, Riihilahti and the Paatela fields. In summer, swimmers, boaters and paddleboarders enjoy Keitele’s sparkle. In winter, you can spot skiers and snowmobilers on the frozen lake. Rumor has it there’s a devil’s nest at the foot of Riihivuori. Hmm, could you perhaps spot the devil itself from the view?

Magnificent views from Riihivuori

Getting there: The trail to Riihivuori starts about 50 m after the intersection of Riihivuorentie and Sahantie. There is a nature trail sign by the road. Address: Sahantie 74. Please note there is no parking on site. Note: no maintenance!

Kirppuvuori, Suolahti

Discover the landscapes that Akseli Gallen-Kallela once captured in his paintings. Gallen-Kallela’s work Ilvesluola was created from views of the rocky slope. From the top of Kirppuvuori you can see the old school, but can you spot the round-headed tree?

Kirppuvuori forest

Getting there: Drive to the end of Mansikka-ahontie, where there is a small lay-by. Walk up along the forest road. Note: no maintenance! What’s your favorite hideaway?

Kaakkovuori observation tower, Sumiainen

Kaakkovuori observation tower is part of the Laulavan Mörön trail. The trail is not maintained in winter, so be sure to dress for the conditions. You can allow a few hours for a trip to the Kaakkovuori observation tower—time flies while enjoying the views and your snacks.

Getting there: The Syvälahti parking area for the Laulavan Mörön trail has been moved to a gravel pit along Syvälahdentie. After walking approx. 150 m along the road to the left, you’ll find the trailhead at the junction by the old school. Please do not enter the yard area, as the building is privately owned. Address: Syvälahdentie 454, 44260 Vihijärvi
