The Wanha Asema area and harbor form a valuable ensemble of transport and cultural history that has retained its original character well. The area clearly illustrates the late 19th-century effort to connect inland waters by rail to the seacoasts and thus to Europe.

In the Wanha Asema courtyard stands the bronze Lastaajat sculpture by sculptor Tapio Junno, created in 1982 for the city’s 50th anniversary. The sculpture honors the work of Suolahti’s timber loaders.

The station building designed by architect Bruno Granholm—with its rail yards, warehouses, engine shed, and housing for railway workers—was completed when operations began in 1898. The building was extended westward in 1904, increasing the waiting room, office, and freight facilities. Suolahti’s first stationmaster, Rudolf Ahonius, served from 1898 to 1925. Initially planned as a modest platform stop, the Suolahti station developed into an important station, and Ahonius’s official residence in the building became a significant cultural home. Visitors included artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela and writer Juhani Aho.
