Piru Naiseksi - Kievari Summer Theater July 8 - July 19, 2020
Kievarin Kesäteatteri |
Because of the Covid-19 disruptions, summer theatre productions were put on hold, ended, or moved straight to next summer. Hoping for better times, we look forward to these postponed productions finding their way to audiences someday.
Linnateatteri from Turku is making a focused visit to the village of Hietama by taking a few pieces from the production on the road. Antto Terras’s Piru Naiseksi, which had its Äänekoski premiere yesterday, isn’t exactly brand-new this summer. The play premiered last August, so it has been in the repertoire for a while.
In the lead roles we see the wonderful Jaana Saarinen; she has a significant work history in both theatre and television. In the male lead we see Jukka Rasila, a man of many situations and faces. The foundations are solid, and we waited a little nervously to see what was to come. The audience turnout is admirable, and the restricted-seating auditorium is almost full.

If the play had to be described yn one sentence, it would go something like this. A story about a woman’s aging, written by a man, built from several shorter sketches into an ingenious whole. Jaana Saarinen’s brilliant character carries the story itself, while Jukka Rasila transforms into several male characters as the evening progresses. Rasila’s phenomenal ability to transform creates the illusion that there are multiple actors involved, and the changes happen with precision honed by experience. The play is not lacking in comedy either; watching the duo’s seamless teamwork, one can only marvel at how multiple different environments are created for the audience over the course of the evening.
It is also worth noting that Esa the sound man completes the play by bringing the necessary sound effects to their proper places, and the whole, in its exemplary form, is second to none.

Piru Naiseksi is quite light and entertaining; through comedy, it also manages to delve into slightly more serious matters without offending anyone. The professionalism of the actors and assistants really shows and can be heard; the viewer never feels embarrassed at any point. The whole doesn’t stumble; once it breaks into a gallop, it carries the audience with it all the way to the finish. We warmly recommend seeing this piece, and let this be a foretaste of what’s to come—the entire late-summer programme is also worth taking in. Tickets are still available, and let’s definitely support the local scene and the arts, which were hit hardest when the pandemic restricted events.
