Kapeenniemi Recreation Area
Rapids scenery, trails through varied terrain, and historically valuable sites make the Kapeenniemi area a special nature destination.
Kapeenniemi is a recreation, rapid-fishing, nature, and landscape protection area owned by the City of Äänekoski. Its diverse trail network is ideal for short nature outings. Kapeenkoski and Luijankoski, protected under the Rapids Protection Act, are part of the Keitele–Päijänne canal route. The Kapeenniemi area has over 4 km of marked trails that cross different types of terrain.
For nature hikers, the area offers routes of various difficulty levels:
• Accessible route (green): an easy, barrier-free route for all visitors.
• Easy route (blue): well suited to beginners and families.
• Intermediate route (red): a slightly more demanding route that offers more challenge.
• Difficult route (black), fisherman's path: intended for anglers.
The routes make pleasant day trips, and the Pytingin area is well suited for tent camping.
Please use the outdoor toilets and recycle during your visit.
There are also several lean-to shelters, campfire sites, and viewpoints. Along Repenpolku there is a fully accessible shore pier 450 meters from the parking area. The paths to it are easy. It is possible to drive to the accessible pier by car. Contact us in advance at matkailu@aanekoski.fi to arrange access.
The dominant Luijanharju is part of an esker chain that starts at Laukaa’s Nurmijärvi and ends on the shore of Pyhäjärvi at the Saarijärvi border. Resident and visiting wildlife include flying squirrel, otter, hare, moose, white-tailed deer, merganser, mallard, goldeneye, capercaillie, black woodpecker, hazel grouse, grayling, and brown trout. The area has plenty of old-growth forest, including valuable groves and spruce bog. Kapeenniemi is an ecologically valuable area. Stay on marked trails, as new unofficial paths erode the fragile terrain and leave marks for years.
Kapeenniemi has several historically valuable sites: Honkaristi, Ristinkivi, a frame sawmill, and a granary village. Religious services have been held at the site of Honkaristi since the 1400s.
The permit fishing area includes Makasiinikoski, Luijankoski, and Kärmekoski. The lowest rapid on the route, Kapeenkoski, is reservation-only for groups and can be rented as part of other services. For details on fishing permits and regulations, see Kapeenkoski Travel Oy, which operates in the southern part of the island area.
The Kapeenkoski peninsula is leased for use by the tourism company operating there, and the area is reserved for private events. Open days are arranged, during which you can visit Myllyniemi, Aittakylä, and Kievari. The area is marked on the map with a red dashed line. Please respect the local business and keep the area peaceful. Thank you.
