Sumiaisten Church

The neo-Gothic style church in Sumiaisten was consecrated in 1890. A distinctive feature of the beautiful church is the octagonal shape of the nave.

The first church in Sumiaisten was built in 1802. At that time a cemetery was also established in Sumiaisten. The current church was consecrated in 1890. It was built on the site of the previous one, which had fallen into poor condition.

From the old church were inherited the nave’s rare octagonal shape, the pulpit, and the altarpiece now in the sacristy. The candle chandelier placed on the side wall of the nave also originates from there.

The present church was designed by E.T. Granstedt, and its decoration uses the neo-Gothic style. The latest interior renovation was carried out in 2003.

The altarpiece depicting the Resurrection was painted by Widolfia von Engström-Ahrenberg in 1901. At that time, female artists were rare and not always valued on a par with male artists.

The rya wall hanging on the wall was woven by Mrs Carolina Maria Lagus in 1881.

The wedding rya titled "Urut" was designed by Terttu Tomero and donated to its home church in 1963 by Sumiaisten Maatalousnaiset.

The church seats 350 - 400 people.

Sumiaisten Church serves as a road church in summer.
